Obituary

Wendell John Schaal. 85, of Kentwood, MI. Passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 19, 2022. Wendell was known for his dry wit and sense of humor. He was a caring man who would help anyone in need. After a hurricane came through, on his own he brought boards to Shell Island in FL and fixed the dock and walkway so people had access to it again. A special interest was American History. He enjoyed teaching 9th grade civics in his early years. He opened an employment agency and after that went to work for Allstate Insurance. His on-going interest was travel and he was happy to have made it to all fifty states and beyond. Wen was a Red Cross volunteer going on emergency calls responding to fires, floods, tornados, and hurricanes at all hours of the day and night. He enjoyed fishing, rebuilding and selling mopeds, listening to Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, and other old-time gospel music. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of 62 years and their five children. Todd (fiance Melissa Levack), Sheri (Rick) LaPorte, Julie (Ed) Doray, Laurie Schaal, John (Julianne) Schaal; grandchildren Ben (Maricarmen), Brady, Alli (Mason), Olivia (Austin), Chris, Elise (Andrew), Amber, Isaac and Levi; and 7 great-grandchildren. Visitation from 1:00-2:00 on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 with the funeral following at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI.
