Obituary

Virginia Marie Haan, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her hometown of Grand Rapids on November 27, 2023. Born on May 24, 1934, to Marinus and Louise Housekamp, Virginia was a beacon of love, faith, and service throughout her 89 years of life. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, John (Clark) Houskamp, Richard (Jule) Houskamp, and Kenneth Houskamp. She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Warren, and their loving children, James Haan, Doug (Sandy) Haan, and Sharon (Phil) Nienhuis. Virginia's legacy also lives on in her eight cherished grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Her extended family includes her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marge Houskamp, Nels (Kay) Rotman, Carol Haan, Jan (Fritz) Billins, Cheryl (Donley) DeGroot, and Marcia (Fred) Hulst. Virginia's life was marked by her unwavering love for her family and her deep faith. Her family was her pride and joy, and she made sure they always knew how much she loved them. Her generosity and compassion were evident in her actions, as she was a Christ-like example of how to serve others well. Virginia had a special talent for baking, and she used this gift to bring comfort to those who were ill or in need, with meals going out weekly from her kitchen. Professionally, Virginia served as a secretary at Calvin College, where she was known for her dedication and hard work. Her commitment to service extended beyond her professional life, as she also volunteered for World Renew, a global development and disaster response organization. Her work in these roles reflected her deep commitment to helping others and making a difference in her community. In her spare time, Virginia had a passion for knitting. She lovingly crafted Afghans and baby sweaters, each stitch a testament to her patience and care. These hand-knit items will continue to provide warmth and comfort to their recipients, just as Virginia did throughout her life. Virginia was a woman of deep faith, and this faith was the foundation of her life. She lived out her beliefs in her daily actions, always striving to show love and kindness to those around her. Her faith-filled life was an inspiration to all who knew her. Please join the family for visitation at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE) on Thursday, November 30, from 5-8 pm. A funeral service will be held at LaGrave Avenue CRC (107 LaGrave Ave SE) on Friday, December 1, 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Ruth Boven and Rev.
