Obituary

Tina Buys Van Dyke, age 91, passed away Friday, October 27, 2023. Tina was born in Edgerton, Minnesota, on December 4, 1931. She joined a large and loving family that eventually numbered 15 children. Throughout her life, Tina had many varied interests, the most important one being Louis Van Dyke, whom she married in Lynden, WA, on Dec. 21, 1951. After spending a number of years in Seattle, the family moved to Sioux Center, Iowa in 1963, where Louis taught at Dordt College. There, Tina devoted herself to her family, which had grown to 5 children. She lovingly provided for her family by using her skills at vegetable gardening, sewing, and cooking. One could never forget the wonderful aroma of her homemade bread coming out of the oven! Tina also found time to work as an EMT, CPR trainer and bird watcher, identifying over 100 bird species from her back yard. She also devoted countless hours to church activities and various local charities. She had a heart for helping others and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in Sioux Center. In 2018, Tina and Louis moved to Grand Rapids to be closer to family. Tina's life was marked by a steadfast faith in God, shown by a life of serving others. Tina is preceded in death by her husband, Louis, who passed away in 2019. She is survived by 5 children, Steve, (Vonnie) of Caledonia, MI, Alan (Cyndie) of Grand Haven, MI, Joan (Terry) of Hays, KS, Michael (Lillian) of Torrance, CA, and Wayne (Karla) of Bullhead City, AZ; 9 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
