Thomas Edward Lyzenga, age 67, passed away on June 1, 2022, at home peacefully with his family around him. He leaves behind his wife Tina (Wirebaugh) Lyzenga of 14 years, his children, Thomas Paul Lyzenga of Newaygo, Brian (Ashley) Lyzenga of Caledonia, Stacey (Justin) Lorimer of Battle Creek, his grandchildren, Brinley Lyzenga, Jase Lyzenga, Evan Lyzenga, and Evelyn Lorimer. Along with many nieces, nephews, and friends; his family in blue and his dog Moose. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert J. Lyzenga (1990) and Jeanetta A. Lyzenga (2021).

Tom worked his way through Ferris State University criminal justice program at atlas rental truck, he then served for 31 years as a police officer which started in Dewitt Township on 7-7-1977 for a year and then changed and came to the Grand Rapids Police Department on 8-8-1978 and finished his career in 2007. During his career he was in the detective bereau, vice, XVOA, robbery homicide and became the "dead baby" specialist. He worked on the street in all areas of the city as a patrolman but finished back in the street as a Sargent mainly on the Northeast Side. Most of his police career he was a hostage negotiator, a field training officer, he also served on the Fraternal Order of Police board for lodge number 97 for over 25 years. When Tom retired his favorite retirement job was taking care of his grandchildren every day before and after school. Tom also worked at Cabela's the first year the store was open. He loved Michigan football, hunting pheasants out west with his son Brian, NASCAR races with his son Thomas, scuba diving with his wife Tina, and watching hockey games especially the griffins where he met his wife. But most of all, Tom enjoyed being around friends and family, he had a wonderful gift in which he could sit and talk with anyone for hours. He will be missed by many people as he had a heart of gold and touched many lives over the years. The family would like to say a special thank you to Life EMS, Tandem 365, and Kindred Hospice for the wonderful care and support.
