Celebrating the Life of Stewart J. Vander Werp

Stewart J. Vander Werp, affectionately known as Stu (Carpets), was born on October 21, 1929, in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Jeanette Vander Werp, his brothers Gordon, George (Zip), Russell, and sisters Geraldine Prins and Helen Daining. Stu had a lifelong career in the flooring business owning the Rug and Carpet Shop along with investing in real estate. He sold his business and retired at forty-eight. He continued to sell flooring to family and friends through his son's flooring business. He assumed other duties there in his later years, still working three days a week until he officially retired well into his nineties. Stu was an active member at Cascade Country Club for over a half a century. Golf was not just a hobby for Stu: it was a passion that brought immense joy and fulfillment to his life. He played a competitive game and was never at a loss for invitations from fellow members or friends from other clubs to tee up. He scored three hole-in-ones throughout his years of playing and maintained a 7 handicap. Beyond his professional and golfing endeavors, Stu was a member at First Christian Reformed Church, a place deeply rooted in family history. His grandfather's role as a minister there added a layer of personal significance. Stu's warm personality and infectious sense of humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. A smile was his greeting. He treated everyone as if they were a lifelong friend. His easy-going nature, wit and goofy shenanigans were as engaging as his charm. In March, when we asked Stu how he would wish to spend his days if there were no limitations: free from physical therapy, resting effortlessly in his wheelchair or surrounded by some of his favorite things like golf and the beach. He expressed a simple but profound wish, "I'd like to meet Jesus." It is with heavy hearts that we say our final farewell, yet with joyful gratitude we celebrate that Stu's request has been granted bringing him eternal peace and joy. His legacy of kindness, humor and love will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Stu is survived by his children, Randy (Chris) Vander Werp, Karen Vander Werp, Diane Vander Werp, sister, Margie Yonker, along with grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, cherished companion Sherry Vander Plow, and lifelong friend Max Anderson. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Faith Hospice for the comforting and excellent care they provided for their father. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, October 23, 2026 at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, 49546) with Rev. Kent Frens officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends during visitation from 11am – 12pm, prior to the service. A private family graveside service will be held at Blythefield Memory Gardens. In keeping with Stu's love for animals, donations in his memory can be made to the Kent County Animal Shelter , an organization close to his heart.
