Shirley Stoepker Sybesma was born September 18, 1933 and went peacefully to her heavenly home on February 21, 2022 at the age of 88. Life was always an adventure for Shirley and everywhere she went she added a spark to life. Upon graduating from Calvin College in 1955 she took off for a teaching position in southern California where she met her husband, Durk Sybesma. She was a volunteer extraordinaire, involved in organizing events and projects for her church, the area schools, civic organizations and within the communities she lived. Which included these California cities: Bellflower, Ontario, and Visalia. In her later years she made a return to Grand Rapids, MI. Maintaining a lifelong love of learning and teaching, Shirley was always ready to learn the next thing or teach you something. A Fieldtrip Queen, Shirley organized her family and friends on countless adventures. To the beach, the mountains, on hikes, to parks, cultural attractions and on long bike rides all over California. She was flexible, eager to engage and always quick to offer generous hospitality. Her rose bushes were legendary for beauty under her expert care. You could often find her puzzling or knitting.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Durk and grandson David Knol. Surviving her are dear children Faye & Harry Knol, Charles & Laurel Sybesma, Arnold & Mary Sybesma, Jennifer & Gary Boyd. 8 beloved grandchildren, 11 precious great-grandchildren. Her brother Jack Stoepker, sisters-in-law Helen Schilder, Marilynn Sybesma, Karen Sybesma and many other relatives and friends.
