Obituary

Shirley Faye Osterhaven, our most loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, is finally home.  Her journey on earth transitioned smoothly, peacefully to heaven this past Saturday morning, after starting in Holland, Michigan on May 22, 1935.  All four of her kids and their spouses were there and able to say 'goodbye'.  Upon her celestial arrival and seeing her Savior face to face, we are certain that she hugged and kissed her husband of almost 70 years, who has been waiting patiently for her arrival for the last 18 months.  I'll bet that was quite a reunion!  Next would be her mom and dad, Albert and Anne (Deemter) Herweyer … as well as brothers in law, Bernard (Bunk) Van Ark and Gerald (Jerry) Veldkamp. As was mentioned, she is leaving behind her four children Paul and (Linda) Sue Osterhaven, Keith and Lori Osterhaven, Terry and Dianne (Osterhaven) Flynn, and James and Melissa Osterhaven; as well as 15 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; plus brothers and sisters - Norma VanArk, Lois Veldkamp, Sandy (Bill) VanderPloeg, Alan (Judy) Herweyer & Mike (Rose) Herweyer - nieces and nephews, and special friends that her and dad made while at the Holland Home.   She had what many would call 'a wonderful life', and they would be correct in most aspects. But she had her battles too, like we all do – physically, mentally, emotionally … and now to be made whole again, miraculously and in the twinkling of an eye, has to be so fabulous … we are so happy for her!   Not as 'adventurous' as her husband (she was often the voice of reason trying to get him to 'throttle back' – just a little, at least!), the simpler things in life made her happy – she loved spending time with her kids and grand kids, reading her bible and devotions, journaling, doing crossword puzzles or reading a book – under a blanket in her recliner in the colder months or in her shorts on the deck looking out over Gun Lake in the warmer ones.  One of the funny little phrases that dad (and he had a TON of them!) used to say when he was trying to get her attention was 'Shirley … goodness and mercy!'.  As I sat writing this, I could not help but think what a good metaphor those words put together are for who mom was to those who were close to her – she was full of goodness and mercy.  She was a great mom, always had time, always there for us, always showed us her love.  'Mom', I miss you so much already!  I know it will take time to adjust, for the huge empty place I have in my heart to go away … for the memories to bring smiles instead of tears.  But it will happen … and the next ones will be a totally different kind of tears, tears of joy – brought to us by the King of goodness and mercy.  Most of the time after stopping to visit you, I would say 'Goodbye mom - I love you … I'll see you again soon – not sure exactly the day, but soon!'  Your reply was always the same - 'Well, I hope so!'   So … Goodbye mom - I love you … I will see you again soon – not sure exactly when, but soon! Visitation will be Friday August 5, 2022 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Caledonia Christian Reformed Church with a funeral service immediately following at 12:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Greater Michigan Chapter, 25200 Telegraph Road, Suite 100, Southfield, Michigan 48033-7433.
