Ruth J. (Wolma) Witte, age 94, joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in heaven on Thursday, March 24, 2022. Surviving are her children, Linda R. Witte (Chicago), Curtis R. (Ruth) Witte, (Grand Rapids), Kevin L. (Vicki) Witte (Colorado Springs); grandchildren, Jonathan (Amanda) Witte, Christopher Witte, and Carolyn Witte (all of Grand Rapids) and sister-in-law, Mae (Witte) Boersema (Jenison). She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, the Rev. Wilmer R. Witte, her youngest child, Gayla R. Witte, and her sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Harwin DeVries.
Ruth graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and worked as a dispatcher for some years before marrying Wilmer upon his graduation from Calvin Theological Seminary. Together, Wil and Ruth served Christian Reformed Churches in Ackley, Iowa, Walker, Michigan, Holland, Michigan (Pillar Church), Western Springs, Illinois and Grand Rapids, Michigan (Mayfair).
Mrs. Witte was a capable partner to her pastor husband in their shared ministry. She was a woman of empathy, compassion, intelligence, and common sense. Her life was filled with love and service to others, including parishioners at churches they served, four busy children, three dynamic grandchildren, and her mother and aunt who lived to very advanced ages and looked to her as a source of support. Ruth was artistic and had a strong interest in color, pattern, fabric and design all her life. She loved to sing and participated in many choirs. She always had a ready smile and an easy laugh, often at her own expense.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 am at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Peter Jonker and Chad Boorsma officiating. A time for fellowship and refreshments will follow. The family will greet friends and relatives at the Church from 10-11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gayla R. Witte Oratorio Scholarship Fund at Calvin University or to Faith Hospice.
