Ruth
Lobbes
Mar 20, 1939 — Apr 18, 2023
Ruth Jeanne Lobbes went to be with her Lord on April 18, 2023. She was born in Chicago, IL on March 20, 1939 and was adopted by Joseph and Jeanette Hommes. She lived her early years in Chicago and the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945. She attended Oakdale Christian School and Grand Rapids Christian High School. After graduation in 1957 she enrolled at Calvin College and the Blodgett School of Nursing. She met Ken Lobbes at her cousin's wedding in Evergreen Park, Illinois in 1957 and they were married on June 26, 1959.
Their early married years were spent in Chicago while Ken attended Northwestern University Medical School and Iowa City, Iowa during his anesthesiology residency. In 1965 they settled permanently in Grand Rapids.
Ruth is survived by her husband Ken Sr, daughter Heidi Erwood, and sons Ken Jr (Kristen), Mike, Tim (Tracy), and Jeff (Kari). She is also survived by grandchildren Amanda Damsteegt (Jason), Rebecca Erwood, Matthew and Courtney Lobbes, Anna and Ian Lobbes, and Kolbe Vandenberg. She is also survived by her brother Bill Holmes of Leesburg, Florida.
Ruth was a member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church since 1959. She used her artistic and sewing talents to assist in the completion of many banners used by the church over the years. She also donated time to the church Family Assistance Program and the administration of the Kids Hope program. She was also a volunteer at Butterworth Hospital for a number of years.
After her children were all in school, she attended Aquinas College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1983.
She enjoyed reading and was a member of the same book club for over 50 years. Her artistic talents included weaving, quilting, counted cross stitch, knitting, and watercolor painting. The latter two were continued after she suffered a stroke in 1996 resulting in left arm paralysis. She was an example of patience and courage in facing nearly 27 years of limited mobility. She enjoyed the fellowship of friends at church, book club, and CALL (Calvin Academy for Lifelong Learning) knitting group. She looked forward to being free of her handicap in the presence of her Lord and Savior!
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 25, 2023 from 4pm - 7pm and Wednesday, April 26, 2023 from 10am to 11am in the Calvin Christian Reformed Church Fellowship Hall. The funeral service will be held at Calvin Christian Reformed Church on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 11:00 am.
