Obituary

Rosa Del Carmen Guzmán, 86, of Grand Rapids, Michigan was called to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 15, 2022. She was born on May 9, 1936, to Alberto Martinez and Maria Dolores Vega in Arjona Bolivar, Colombia. Rosa was the youngest of seven children and the last to leave this earth. In 1957 Rosa was united in marriage with Juan E. Vanegas. They had two children, Mariano Vanegas and Ketty Vanegas (Davis) five years later Rosa was widowed. Seeing herself alone with her children, Rosa accepted the invitation of her sister Rafaela, in 1967 to emigrate to the United States. She lived in Miami Florida with her sister for several years, until her niece Rosa Mercedes Peinado invited her to move to Holland, Michigan to accompany her. Years later she met her second husband Orestes Guzmán, they moved to Grand Rapids, MI and had a daughter, Georgina Guzmán. Miguel and Nora Moore invited Rosa in 1971 to attend the Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church and that is where she met her Lord and Savior. She and her two children were baptized in 1974, they were one of the first pioneers of the Hispanic Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From that moment she was a great daughter of God and served the Lord faithfully in the church as director of deaconess and other responsibilities. She loved to go out and do missionary work, and never missed an opportunity to talk to others about the word of God. Rosa was a person of great strong character especially for the things of God, at the same time she was affectionate with everyone, attentive to the needs of others to help them with what she could and opened her home to those who needed it. She said that was a way to show God's love while doing her missionary work. She enjoyed spending time with family, reading the Bible, gardening, cooking and her special pass time crocheting. She loved to crochet and would crochet to raise funds for the church. To each of her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and people closest to her she crocheted them either a hat, scarf, slippers, tablecloth, bedspread, or other decoration for the house. She did all that with great love. Rosa was a great mother and father to her two eldest children. She was truly a loving, kind, generous, humble, and caring mother, and wife. She was hardworking and responsible, always concerned about the well-being of her children and grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her children: Mariano Vanegas, Ketty (Gary) Davis and Georgina Guzmán; grandchildren who always brought a smile to her face: Michael, Bianca, James, Fernando, Juan, Vanesa, and Andres; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Many special fellow church members and friends will also miss her. Rosa fought the good fight. She finished the race. She kept her faith. The family would like to thank Raybrook Manor 4th floor nursing staff for the care and support they provided to Rosa for the past year and Faith Hospice for caring for her in her final days. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 11:00 am on Sunday, October 23rd at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE Grand Rapids, MI 49546. The family will greet friends and relatives for visitation from 10-11 am prior to the service. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 2894 Patterson Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49512 on October 24th at 11:00 am.
