Roger Blaine
Strauss
Oct 2, 1930 — Jan 4, 2025
Roger Strauss passed away unexpectedly on January 4, 2025, in Wyoming, Michigan at the age of 94. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 2, 1930, Roger was known for his love of family, natural athletic abilities, honesty, and keen sense of responsibility throughout his life.
It was evident to all that Roger took great joy in providing and caring for his family. He adored his wife of 74 years, Phyllis Hudson Strauss. It was love at first sight when they met at the Grand Rapids Coliseum Roller Rink. Roger's devotion to Phyllis included long bus rides across town and sometimes long walks back home just to spend time with her. After two years of going steady, they married on May 5, 1950. A year later they had a son, Ronald. And a year and a half after that they welcomed a daughter, Sharon. Ballroom dancing, travels throughout the United States and Europe, and wintering for several years in Florida made for many happy family memories.
Roger was always a natural athlete. In his younger years, he was a formidable softball player, for a time holding the highest batting average in the city. Roger's love for sports also extended to bowling and one of his happiest pastimes--golf, which he took up at age 35. Unless the weather absolutely wouldn't allow it or he was traveling, Roger began most days with a round or two of golf. In fact, he relished meeting friends for at least nine holes and a cup of coffee up until his passing. His golf buddies were a source of true friendship to him.
A man who knew the value of hard work and wore the mantel of responsibility well, Roger began working at the age of 14. He held several odd jobs, sometimes simultaneously, until he started a career in 1950 at the Metal Office Furniture Company, later known as Steelcase. He dedicated 37 years to the company before retiring at the age of 57. Post-retirement, Roger enjoyed another 37 years filled with hobbies, travel, and family time.
Roger leaves behind his beloved wife, Phyllis Strauss; his son, Ronald Strauss and wife Vivian; daughter, Sharon Wood; brother, Gordon Strauss; and sister, Virginia VanZalen. His legacy continues through his five grandchildren, Jeremy Wood, Kevin Wood, Carriann Sillman, Kimberly Remtema, Mark Strauss, and seven great-grandchildren. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rose Strauss; in-laws, Kenneth and Lillien Hudson; brother-in-law Jim VanZalen, son-in-law, James Wood; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Strauss.
Roger Strauss will be remembered for his steadfast presence, integrity, and care for those he loved. His life exemplified commitment, whether to his career, hobbies, or loved ones, leaving a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
