Obituary

Dr. Roger Pietras endeared others to him with his quirky personality, impressive intellect, dry wit, and generous heart. Whether he was playfully quizzing people on their knowledge of foreign capitals, creating word art in Klingon, or ending conversations by offering gratitude for spaying or neutering one's pet, he always knew how to bring a smile. It is therefore, with sadness that we announce his passing on January 20, 2025, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eric Pietras, and close friend, Tom Erickson. He will be missed by those he leaves behind including his wife of 18 years, Mary Anne Pietras; his children, Amy Pietras, Sara (Angelos) Alexanian, Brian (Kira) Pietras, and Kevin (Pam) Pietras; his stepchildren, Sharon (Jon) ZIebol, Timothy (Susan) Ryan, Jessica (Scott) Kerby, and Daniel (Lorraine) Ryan; and his grandchildren Sophia, Matthew, Rachel, Eva, and Hannah. Also grieving his loss are his life-long friends Charlie Selmon, Jr. and Joan Redmond; his former spouse Kathy Pietras, mother of his children; his niece Jo Weiner; and his 15 step-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren.

Yet, even in our grief, there is a sense of a life well-lived for Roger had many adventures and accomplishments: achieving a master's degree in engineering, serving as an officer in the Army during the cold war, graduating from the University of Michigan's Medical School, and working as an anesthesiologist for thirty-seven years. He was known for contributing to a positive work environment, providing excellent patient care, and for leaving donuts in the nurses' lounge. He enjoyed an eclectic assortment of hobbies such as glass blowing, traveling, playing piano, taking ballroom dance classes, and reading magazines and journals. And he was known for generously opening his home for holidays and celebrations. Family and friends may gather on Monday, January 27, at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE. Visitation will begin at 10am, followed by a service at 11am, and then a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the Salvation Army. And if you haven't yet, be sure to spay or neuter your pet: Roger would appreciate it.
