Mr. Robert J. Smith, aged 91 of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 29, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris J. Smith, parents, Robert A. Smith and Eva Smith and sister Virginia Bodbyl. He is survived by his children, Sue (Carl) Ross, Judy (Roland) West, Larry (Gerri) Smith, and David Smith. Grandchildren, Jason and Lee Ross, Melissa and Jim Deyoung, Christopher and Kyle Quirk, Amber and Chris Alviar, and Heather and Jared Ruehs; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Smith Morris, and several nieces and nephews. Bob was born in East Grand Rapids in 1932 and spent his childhood years in Lowell, Michigan and graduated from Lowell High School in 1950. Bob was enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves in 1952 and was discharged in 1955. In 1952, Bob also started his career working for the city of East Grand Rapids in and retired as Superintendent of public works in 1990; including his service in the public works department, he also was a volunteer firefighter for 25 years. In 1964, Bob also became a lifelong standing member in the Masonic Lodge of the State of Michigan in Grand Rapids, following his father as well. Visitation will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St SE Grand Rapids MI 49546, Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 9:30AM, with a funeral service to follow at 10:30AM.
