Obituary

Robert J. Carrington Jr. was born in Grand Rapids, MI on November 9, 1942, and passed away in Grand Rapids on Sunday, February 6, 2022. Bob was a graduate of South High School in 1961 and nominated the class character. Bob served in the U.S. Army from October 1964-August 1966 with a tour in Vietnam as a helicopter powertrain mechanic from September 1965 to discharge. After the war, Bob returned to Grand Rapids and worked at various companies including Art Optical, Keeler Brass, and Grand Valley State University. In 1970, Bob bought a house on Bostwick Lake where he lived for 51 years. Bob loved the lake and the Rockford area, but health concerns including macular degeneration forced a move to Pilgrim Manor assisted living in October 2021. Bob's loss of vision was a source of frustration to him as he learned to cope with his blindness. Bob was preceded in death by father Robert J. Carrington Sr., mother Irma Leone (Ellis) Carrington, stepmother Edie (Dykstra) Carrington, uncle Walter Ellis, and cousin Jacob Ellis. Bob is survived by his brothers Daniel (Hanette) Carrington, Thomas (Colleen) Carrington, John (Elaine) Carrington, and sister Kathy (John) Peot. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews whom he adored, as well as his Ellis cousins Larry, Rick, Randy, and Bob and their families. Bob dearly missed one of his best lifelong friends, Bobby Sayen who passed away a few years ago, and he was appreciative of the Sayen family for staying in touch. Bob was very grateful to Cindy Thompson, Sheila Bennett and his other friends at the lake who carted him around after he had to quit driving and helped him out in so many other ways. Bob was also grateful to the staff at Pilgrim Manor and the Spectrum Health Hospice team who cared for him during his last days. Per Bob's wishes, cremation has taken place and interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punch Bowl) in Hawaii where the sun will always shine down on him. A celebration of Bob's life will be scheduled at a later date. If you wish to make a memorial donation in Bob's name, please do so to an organization of your choice or to the American Heart Association.
