Richard
Van Dyken
Nov 15, 1938 — Feb 21, 2025
Richard "Rich" Van Dyken, a cherished soul known for his warmth and generosity, passed away peacefully in his home on February 21, 2025, at the age of 86, in his lifelong hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born on November 15, 1938, Rich's life was one of dedication, service, and joy, which touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Growing up in Grand Rapids, Rich graduated from South High School in 1956, leaving behind a legacy of camaraderie with his South High classmates and teammates, still attending their gatherings up until the end. After high school, he bravely served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, instilling in him a sense of discipline and patriotism that he carried throughout his life.
Rich's professional career was marked by an impressive tenure of 54 years at United Wholesale/Spartan Stores, where he started by loading trucks and worked his way up to to Director of Operations of United Wholesale Grocery Operations. He was not only a respected colleague but also a mentor to many. His work ethic, loyalty, and leadership were hallmarks of his character, and his influence within the organization was profound and far-reaching.
At home, Rich was a loving husband to his late wife, Linda Van Dyken, who preceded him in death. Together, they built a family founded on love, respect, and the joy of shared experiences. Rich was a proud father to Kelli (and her spouse Pat Scholl), Mike (and his wife Sharon), and Stacy Van Dyken. His role as a grandfather to Jeffrey (and his wife Laine) Van Dyken, Jordan (and his wife Emina) Little, and Jayson Van Dyken was one of his greatest joys, as he imparted wisdom, laughter, and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Rich is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in -law Judy and Craig Carpenter, Marcia ad Bob Cross, Karen Pullen and Robert Oosdyke.
He is also survived by special friend Betty Kerr.
Outside of work and family, Rich had a passion for the great outdoors, which was most notably expressed through his love of golf, and his many drives to the beach just to see Lake Michigan. Rich also had a talent for cooking, and his kitchen was a place of gathering and gastronomy. His canning of tomatoes was not just a hobby but an annual tradition that family and friends eagerly anticipated each season.
Rich's presence was a gift to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt. He lived a life rich in experiences, relationships, and love, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Rich's life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived, and while we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the countless memories and the enduring impact he has left behind.
The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to his long time caregivers Tammy Hale and Dawn Mango.
