Obituary

Richard J. "Dick" Schroeder, 82, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, under the care of Emmanuel Hospice in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was born on February 5, 1944, in Antigo, Wisconsin, to Russell and Meryl Schroeder.

Dick attended St. John's Catholic School through ninth grade and graduated from Antigo High School. He went on to graduate from St. Norbert College, where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma and participated in ROTC for four years.

Dick spent his entire professional career with Aetna Life and Casualty, beginning with training in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Hartford, Connecticut. He held a variety of managerial positions during his career, managing offices in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

An avid Green Bay Packers fan, Dick proudly was himself a Packers shareholder. He was also deeply committed to his community. He was active in the Green Bay and Bethel Park Jaycees and served as president of the Bethel Park Jaycees for one year. His community involvement earned him a nomination for the Outstanding Young Men of America award. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

Family was at the center of Dick's life. While living in Bethel Park, he coached his two sons' baseball and football teams and took great pride in watching them grow. He loved reading and golf and enjoyed traveling, ultimately visiting all 50 states. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Papa Train," a nickname inspired by the Lionel train display he maintained in his basement.

Dick will be remembered for his kindness, his devotion to his family, his generosity toward others, and the wisdom he so freely shared.

He is survived by his wife of 60 plus years, Katherine Schroeder of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his sons, Jeffrey Schroeder (Albra Welch) of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Corey Schroeder (Christine Chamberlain) of Farmington Hills, Michigan; his grandsons, Andrew Schroeder (Elizabeth Schroeder) of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, and Ryan Schroeder of Madison, Wisconsin; and his granddaughter, Melanie Schroeder of Farmington Hills, Michigan. He was predeceased by his grandson. Luke Schroeder.

Dick leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a loving family. And the lasting impact of a life lived with kindness, curiosity, service, and love. Donations in honor of Dick can be made to Emmanuel Hospice, 401 Hall St. SW, Suite 263, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Services will be planned for a later time.
