Obituary

Richard J. Laninga, affectionately known as Dick to his loved ones, was a beacon of strength and inspiration throughout his remarkable life. Born on April 30, 1937, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dick's journey was one marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. On March 11, 2024, Dick passed away peacefully in Wyoming, Michigan, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was surrounded by the family that he adored and the memories that he helped create.

Dick's life was a testament to the power of education and leadership. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Western Michigan University and went on to achieve not one, but two Master's degrees, one in Educational Leadership and another in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan. His passion for education was evident through his illustrious career at Kelloggsville Public Schools, where he served as a high school Mechanical Drawing and Wood Shop teacher, Business Manager, Assistant Superintendent, and eventually, Superintendent. Through his roles, Dick shaped the minds of countless students and set an example for his colleagues, always striving for excellence and integrity.

Outside the walls of academia, Dick was a man of many interests and talents. His early work at his father's business, US Tile, instilled in him a strong work ethic and an appreciation for the value of hands-on knowledge. But it was his love for Ford that really revved his engines. A true Ford man through and through, Dick owned a '40 Ford and several vintage Mustangs over the years. His meticulous nature ensured that there was never a dirty car in his garage, and his passion for craftsmanship extended to carpentry. Dick's skillful hands not only built and repaired for family and friends, but in retirement, he also took up wood carving, leaving behind treasured creations that will forever be cherished by his loved ones.

Family was the cornerstone of Dick's life. He and his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth, created a beautiful legacy together, raising their children Lori & Wes VonSeggern and John & Deb Laninga. The joy in Dick's life multiplied with the birth of his grandchildren, Matt & Trishta Meindertsma, Kari & Montana Otis, Brad & Danielle Laninga, Katie & Brent Sloterbeek, and Melissa & Corey Wright, and later his six great-grandchildren. Each family gathering, especially the Sunday night pizza tradition, was a reflection of the love and warmth that he fostered within his family.

The Laninga family cottage at Gull Lake, a haven since 1955, was the backdrop for countless summers filled with boating, skiing, and swimming. It was here that Dick imparted the values of hard work and relaxation, teaching his children and grandchildren the importance of balance in life. In his golden years, he and Ruth migrated seasonally to Gulf Shores to enjoy the warmth of the sun and the company of each other, away from the harsh Michigan winters.

Dick Laninga was the embodiment of a faith-filled, loving, and generous spirit. His life's work, both personal and professional, was driven by his deep-seated faith and the love he had for his family and friends. He was a pillar in his community, a guiding light to his family, and a generous soul who never hesitated to lend a hand.

Today, as we remember Dick, let us honor his legacy by living with the same conviction and generosity that he did. Let us hold our loved ones a little closer, pursue our passions with a little more fervor, and give of ourselves a little more freely. Dick's story is not one of an end but a continuous ripple of positive influence, touching the lives of all who knew him. Rest in peace, Richard J. Laninga, a man who truly lived a life worth emulating.
