Phyllis J. Verwys (nee Kiel), age 93, departed this earth to meet her Lord and Savior in heaven on July 1, 2023. Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Anthony Kiel, her mother, Pauline Kiel, and her husband and the love of her life, Kenneth J. Verwys. Phyllis is survived by her siblings Adrian (Julie) Kiel, Sharon Kiel, Anthony Kiel, and Jack (Jan) Kiel. Surviving in-laws are John Verwys and Eleanor Pierce. Phyllis is also survived by her children, Michael D. (Susan K.) Verwys and Joni L. (Robert D.) Velthouse. Phyllis' grandchildren are Christian (Rachel) Verwys, Jeremy Verwys (Hannah Sullivan), Jamie (Ryan) Langerak, Ken (Robin Atkinson) Cook, and Diana Cook. Her great grandchildren are Ruby Verwys, Molly Dewey, Micahl Dewey, Jacob Kuiper, and Caleb Kuiper. She has one great great grandchild, Myla White. Phyllis was a consummate homemaker. She loved to decorate, garden, cook, bake, and sew. A woman who loved the Lord, Phyllis was a member of Faith Christian Reformed Church, Riverside Christian Reformed Church, and 7th Ref. Church. She enjoyed leading Calvinettes, writing devotions for Prison Fellowship, and attending Bible Study Fellowship. After Ken died, Phyllis worked as an administrative assistant at Kent Skills Center. Our family would like to express our gratitude to the wonderful nursing staff and care managers at Sunset Manor Assisted Living West who truly became family to Phyllis. We are also thankful for the team at Emmanuel Hospice, an outstanding organization. Services will be held on Friday, July 7 at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. S.E., 49546. Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Love, Inc. or Sunset Senior Communities' Benevolence Fund.
