Peter George
Wobbema
Nov 26, 1921 — Jul 12, 2022
WOBBEMA — Peter George Wobbema, a trusting, faithful child of God throughout his 100 years, passed on to life everlasting on July 12, 2022, at Christian Haven in Grand Haven. Born in Orange City, Iowa, in the autumn of 1921, Peter lived briefly in Chicago as a young boy before moving with his Dutch immigrant parents and younger sister to Grand Rapids. He graduated from Christian High School and served in the U.S Army Infantry during WW2 before returning home to join his father's printing business, Wobbema Press. With his devoted team, Peter steadily expanded and modernized the business. He served many terms as an elder at Boston Square Christian Reformed and Seventh Reformed churches, and was active in the Gideons into his late 90s. Peter was a longtime volunteer driver for the Red Cross and he served other charitable organizations unstintingly. Outliving most of his peers, he made new friends easily among staff and residents during his final decade at Raybrook and in his final year at Christian Haven. He enjoyed word play, delighting his grandchildren with puns and spoonerisms. He was a keen-eyed amateur photographer, a weekend golfer who counted every stroke and a bit of a pool shark in his retirement years. Peter was preceded in death by his loving wife Frances in 2019, and their oldest son Andrew in 1961, and younger sister Claudia Hoffman and husband Boyd, along with many in-laws. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Judy and Bruce Buursma of Grand Haven, Ben and Rebecca Buursma (Ella Rae, Charlie, Theo and Molly) of Grand Haven, David and Lisa Buursma (Hannah and Carson) of Grand Rapids; David Wobbema, Diane Wobbema, Rachel Wobbema (Azariah); and Cathy Carlson, Jim Carlson, Kalen and Matt Arnson (Lucy) and Connie Carlson, all of Grand Rapids. Other survivors include sister in-law Hazel Lautenbach along with loved ones Laura Kett and Stuart and Glenda Hoffman and many other cherished nieces and nephews. A celebration of Peter's life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on August 11, 2022, at Seventh Reformed Church chapel, 950 Leonard NW, with family visitation at 10 a.m. Memorial gifts to Gideons International or Faith Hospice.
