Obituary

Peter John DeKoker, age 76, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 while surrounded by his family after a year-long battle with Glioblastoma. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Winnie DeKoker. Pete will be deeply missed by his wife of 56 years, Sandy; his children, Kurt (Melanie) DeKoker, Kelley (Craig) Johnson; his siblings and in-laws, Nellie Bergsma, Neil (Karen) Dekoker, Kathy (Dave Ridout, Hubert (Denise) DeKoker, Frank (June) Kwiatkowski; his grandchildren, Brendan, Christian, Aubri and Dax (all of whom he cherished); and his step-grandchildren, Collin and Trina. Pete came to America from the Netherlands at 5 years of age. He served in the US Army at Fort Lee, Virginia from 1966-1968. After the service he did an apprenticeship in the printing industry and became a cameraman and supervisor at Hoekstra Printing. In 2000, he went to work for his longtime friend at Zaagman Memorial Chapel. After retiring, he often drove cars for Pfeiffer Lincoln. In June of 2022, he fulfilled the last trip on his bucket list – taking his son, son-in-law, and grandson to Alaska fishing. Besides fishing, Pete loved traveling (United States, Caribbean, and Europe), he loved everything Elvis, enjoyed reading, and proudly watched his grandchildren play hockey. We appreciate and thank all our family and friends that helped us get through this difficult year. We also thank the staff at Butterworth Hospital, Lemmen Holton Cancer Pavilion, Mary Free Bed, Atrio Home Health Care, Faith Hospice and Visiting Angels for their great care and support. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 23 at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE) with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. Pete's family will greet visitors at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5 pm as well as one hour prior to the service on Monday. The family welcomes memories and messages online by visiting Pete's obituary at www.zaagman.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Make-A-Wish Foundation, ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), or Glioblastoma Foundation.
