Obituary

Dr. Dick H. Nieusma Jr. was born in Holland, Michigan on September 20, 1930 to Dick H. Nieusma Sr. and Lillian (VanderHeide) Nieusma, and died on Saturday, July 7, 2018. Dick was the youngest of six children. He attended Holland High School, Hope College, and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. While at Hope, he met Ruth Slotesma and they married in June of 1952. Following dental school, Dick served in the US Army, where he was stationed in Japan. In 1960 Dick and Ruth were appointed by the Southern Presbyterian Church to be missionaries to Korea where they served until 1986. During that time Dick developed an Intern and Residency program for Korean dentists at a mission hospital in Kwangju, Korea. He took great pride in the program’s success and the global dental ministry that the graduates continued after completing the program. After leaving the mission field, Dick served as a visiting professor at the University of Michigan, Oral Roberts University, University of Detroit, and University of Nebraska. In retirement Dick and Ruth lived in Grand Rapids, MI where they were active members of Fifth Reformed Church. Dick was preceded in death by Ruth in 2016 as well as his six siblings. He is survived by his son Paul (Holly) and daughter, Mary (Dany) Sakr, as well as four granddaughters, Laura, Elizabeth, Celine, and Nicole. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 21, 2 PM, at Fifth Reformed Church (2012 Griggs SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506), with visitation prior to the service from 12-2 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Christian Friends of Korea (PO Box 936, Black Mountain, NC 28711) or Gideons International (PO Box 97251, Washington, DC 20090-7251).
