Obituary

Norman Dale DeWeerd, age 91, of Sparta, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ashley Drake.

Norm is lovingly survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois; his children, Brian (Sheryl) DeWeerd, Brenda (Bob) Drake, and Beth (Don) Reahm; his grandchildren, Aaron (Alicia) DeWeerd, Hannah (Preston) Phillips, Jeremiah (Olivia) DeWeerd, Taylor (Vanessa) Drake, and Chloe DeWeerd; and 11 great-grandchildren;. He was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of his 12th great-grandchild, expected next month.

Norm graduated from Saranac High School and attended DeVry college to learn television repair, before being drafted into the U.S. Army. While stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas, he and a group of fellow soldiers helped start a Christian Reformed church in El Paso. A gifted athlete, Norm remained active for many years, including playing softball at the Christian Reformed Recreation Center.

After his military service, Norm began his career at Dickinson Printing, where he worked for decades and ultimately retired as Vice President of Production at the age of 62. He loved the outdoors—especially hunting and fishing—and treasured time on his 100 acres near White Cloud, as well as fishing the Muskegon River. Norm and Lois spent many winters in Texas together. He also enjoyed gardening and could often be found tending his small garden, quietly weeding on summer days.

Above all, Norm dearly loved his family. He lived a joyful, faith-filled life, and now rests in the everlasting life promised through Jesus Christ.

A funeral service celebrating Norm's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Trinity Christian Reformed Church, 660 S. State St., Sparta, MI 45345.

Visitation will be held from 5:00–7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546, and again on Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service, from 10:00–11:00 a.m.

Memorial contributions in Norm's memory may be made to West Michigan Hospice.
