Norma Helen Hutchings Vander Werp, 89, of Grand Rapids, was greeted with the words "Well done, good and faithful servant" by her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 17, 2023. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Russell Vander Werp and her son, Steven Vander Werp. Her legacy of love and overall kindness will be carried on by her children, Scott (Sharon) Vander Werp, Sheri McCarthy, and Sally (Tim) Bennett; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Gilbert Hutchings; sister, Barb Hoogerhyde; and a huge family of relatives and others that she adopted as her own throughout her life. For Norma, if she met you, you were hers. She adopted and loved everyone who walked into her life. It began with our childhood friends and continued throughout our adulthood. To meet her was to love her, and to love her meant you were part of "her" family. Norma was also well known for her thoughtfulness, especially when it came to sending cards and notes. If there was an occasion, she would send a card. If there was just an especially happy day, she would send you a card. If you did a favor for one of her kids, you would receive a card from Norma. She was a pillar of love, loyalty, generosity, dignity, and kindness. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, September 20, from 5:30-7:00 PM at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49546). Funeral services will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel the following day on Thursday, September 21, at 11:00 AM with visitation prior to the service from 10:30-11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Faith Hospice in Norma's name would be appreciated.
