Obituary

Nicholas E Lanning (Nick) passed away on August 22, 2026 at the age of 88. He was born in September 1937 in Grand Rapids, MI, to Dr. Nicholas and Lenore Lanning, and lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, and an open-door generosity that touched everyone he met.

Nearly 30 years in the corporate finance world took Nick and his family to several places around the country. Ever an entrepreneur, he eventually returned to Grand Rapids to build his own successful financial company. As a leader, Nick was known for his sharp mind and his distinct mentorship style: he would tell you what to do, teach you how to do it, and expect you to do it well. Yet, beyond his high standards, he deeply cared for his employees as people, earning their lasting respect and loyalty.

Nick possessed a true sense of adventure and loved traveling by car, logging countless miles across the United States for both business and pleasure. But his favorite destination was always "up north". He was happiest when he was outside – whether managing his woods, hunting, fishing, or going for a boat ride.

Above all, Nick's greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family cottage became the place to be for weekends filled with "up north" fun. Nick's generosity knew no bounds; anyone and everyone, whether related or not, was always welcome. He wanted his children to work hard and be successful, and he took immense pride in watching them build their own lives. If family, friends, or even strangers needed advice or a helping hand, they knew they could turn to Nick – a direct reflection of the personal faith that guided him throughout his life.

Beside him through it all was Sharon, his beloved wife of 67 years, whose unwavering love and care meant everything to him. She was always right there by his side through every season of life, and he will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Nick (Diana) Lanning, Ray (Jeannine) Lanning, and Frances (Tim) Mohney; his grandchildren, Jessica (Oro) Enaohwo, Rachel Cimek, James (Katie) Slagter, Emma Lanning, Olivia Mohney, Jacqueline Lanning and Nicole Mohney; and many great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary (Chuck) Polonowski; his sister-in-law, Sally VanNoord; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was pre-deceased by his parents Dr. Nicholas and Lenore Lanning, brother Richard Lanning, sister, Elizabeth Vladika and brother-in-law Dr. Robert VanNoord.

Honoring Nick's wishes, a private service for his immediate family is being planned to honor his life. He will be buried at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Nick's memory to The Potter's House or Pine Rest Foundation.
