Obituary

Michael "Mike" John Petrusma, born on April 12, 1963, in Ontario, Canada, passed away on November 23, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Kristin (née Stewart), his sons Joshua (Michelle) and Michael, and six cherished grandchildren: Atlas, Tessa, Isla, Jade, Adah, and Jurjen. He is also survived by his mother, Jean Petrusma, brothers Edward (Teresa) and George (Charlene), sister Marlena (Jeff), and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his sister Greta Petrusma and father Jurjen Petrusma.

Mike's life was marked by his deep love for family and athletics. In total, he was a youth and college coach for 35 years.

He dedicated 30 years to coaching athletics at Calvin University leading the Men's Hockey program for 28 seasons, including 15 years alongside his son Josh, and coaching Women's soccer for 6 seasons. His leadership brought the D3 team to a National Championship victory in 2004. In 2023, he proudly coached Team Canada at the World Cup of University hockey in Romania.

Mike was also a driving force in the growth of youth athletics in West Michigan. He was a co-founder of Grand Valley Premier Soccer Club, which has since grown and morphed into Midwest United. He was the clubs first Director of Coaching and spent 11 years coaching teams to multiple titles and a national runners-up in 2001. He served the youth hockey community as the Managing Director of the GR Blades for the past 6 years.

Family was at the heart of Mike's life. Mike loved the long talks with his sons. He treasured time with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events with pride. The annual family camping trips were a highlight, allowing him to connect with his loved ones, most of whom reside in Canada. Mike and Kristin's marriage was celebrated with a memorable wedding on Mackinac Island, a place they revisited each anniversary.

A man of faith, Mike's love for God was evident in his daily life, often singing along to Christian music and living wholeheartedly as one of Christ's agents of renewal in the world through athletics. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
