Obituary

Mia Choi Boerman unexpectedly died at her home in Villa Park, Illinois on Thursday, July 14th at the age of 26. Mia was born in Gwangju, South Korea on June 9th, 1996 and adopted into the home of Rodney and Lois Boerman of Grand Rapids on November 4th, 1996. Mia grew up shooting movies, performing puppet shows, and causing general mayhem with brothers Sam and Josh and sister Becca. A focused student and athlete, Mia attended the Grand Rapids Christian Schools, where she played lacrosse for six years, including four years of high school varsity. In her senior year, she also served as coxswain for a citywide crew team. She graduated from Michigan State University with a major in criminal justice, completing her bachelor's degree in 2018 after three years of accelerated study. That year, she also married David Buffham at a ceremony in Grand Rapids. The two moved to Villa Park together soon afterward and bought a home there. On October 13th, 2021, Mia gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Harper, who lights up every room she enters. Mia will be most remembered for her singular drive to succeed, her care and love for her daughter, and her selfless attitude toward everyone she met. We will miss her immensely. She is survived by husband David; daughter Harper; parents Rodney and Lois; parents-in-law Tom and Susan Buffham; grandmothers Rebecca Boerman and Jean Schutte; siblings Josh (married to Anne Huston), Becca, and Sam; and brothers-in-law Derek and Daniel Buffham, and her biological family in South Korea. A visitation will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE Grand Rapids, MI 49546) on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 5-7 PM. Additional visitation will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 9-11 AM and a service at 11:00 AM at First Christian Reformed Church (651 M.L.K. Jr. St SE Grand Rapids, MI 49507). A private graveside service will be held for immediate friends and family. If one wishes to make a memorial contribution, in lieu of flowers, please make one to Harper's future scholarship fund ( https://gofund.me/ac594f4d ).
