Obituary

Mathew Patrick Groom, age 51, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, April 9, 2022 and is now reunited with his father, Charles Groom. He leaves behind and will be deeply missed by his wife, Kristin; his children, Paige (Colton) Wolfe; Kolin Groom, Morgan Cocco, Addison Groom; his mother, Cherryl Rettig; and many loving in-laws, extended family members, friends, and coworkers. Mat lived life to the fullest. He found great joy in spending time with and encouraging those he loved while always being there to support his children. When he wasn't working on something around the house you could find him enjoying the great outdoors with a fishing pole or paddle in his hand. He loved his work and the people around him at National Nail. In spite of his battle against cancer, he protected those around him and kept a positive outlook. Mat's goal was to inspire others and encourage them to never give up. He modeled this through his faith and perseverance. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 16 at First CRC (651 MLK Jr. St. SE, Grand Rapids, 49507) with Rev. Randy Buursma officiating. There will be visitations with the family at First CRC on Friday from 3-5 & 6-8 pm as well as two hours prior to the service at church on Saturday. If anyone wishes, please consider making a memorial donation to Reel Recovery (www.reelrecovery.org), a support program that offers opportunities for men with cancer to share "courageous conversations" through fly fishing experiences.
