Obituary

Marvin Herbert King, aged 88, joined the Lord in June 2026. He was welcomed home by many: his parents, Herbert and Helen King; his first wife, Margaret, whom he was married to for fifty-seven years; his daughter, Teresa; his grandson, Wesley King; his niece, Julaine Swithers; and his brother-in-law, James "Jim" Buick.

Born and raised in Iowa, Marvin and Margaret chose to settle down in West Des Moines before retiring to Kentwood, Michigan. As a man of many talents, Marvin worked as a consultant and draftsman at Delavan Manufacturing Company, where his designs were used in aircraft for the military and the president. When he wasn't working, Marvin could be found deepening his faith, spending time with his family, gardening, woodworking, or cracking jokes.

Marvin spent his life serving the Lord. In addition to being a board member of First Free Methodist Church in West Des Moines, Marvin spent his spare time volunteering at church-sponsored events. He spent countless hours cleaning the sanctuary, supervising Vacation Bible School camps, and playing baseball with youth groups. Additionally, along with Margaret, he was a founding member of the King Henry Quartet, a musical group that traveled around Iowa singing gospel music.

As a loving brother, father, grandfather, spouse, and uncle, Marvin will continue to watch over his surviving family from Heaven: his sister, Betty Buick; his son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Tami King; his daughter, Karen King; his three granddaughters, Kylee King, Megan Brezka, and Ryan Brezka; his second wife, Ebby King; and his nephews and their spouses, Greg and Val Buick, Bob and Becky Buick, and Julaine's husband, Steve Swithers.

Marvin was a devoted follower of Christ, and the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or Unknown Nations.

In place of a funeral, there will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony at Calvary Church (707 East Beltline Ave NE, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49525) on Thursday, July 9th, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
