Marvin Eugene
Gortsema
Mar 19, 1937 — Jan 26, 2023
Marvin Eugene Gortsema, age 85, of Grand Rapids, MI went to be with his Lord on Thursday, January 26, 2023. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Teresa and Harold Nielcen, Gladys and Clarence Landhuis, Edwin and Elaine Gortsema; and by his grandchildren Travis and Riley Gortsema. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Twyla; children, Douglas Gortsema, Julie Gortsema, David and Kristin Gortsema, Brett and Kristie Gortsema; grandchildren Chad Gortsema, Natasha Gortsema, Victoria Gortsema, Noelle and Matt Pupel, Alecia Gortsema, Andrew Gortsema (fiancee Alexis Bonner), Leah Gortsema; and many nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart. Marvin graduated from Grand Rapids Christian School in 1955 and attended Calvin College. He was Co-owner of Gortsema Greenhouse with his late brother Ed and owned and operated that business for over 40 years. Growing and cultivating flowers was not only his job, it was his passion. Marvin was a man devoted to his Lord, his wife, Twyla and to his children and grandchildren. He adored his family and loved attending their sporting events, concerts and other special functions in their lives. Most memorable activities were family ski trips, and time spent together at Baptist Lake. His family also adored him and took much comfort in his strong hugs, kind words, generous spirit and godly wisdom.
His generosity and servanthood extended beyond his family. Marvin volunteered for several organizations, including the South Christian Sports Boosters and World Renew, and he mentored individuals struggling with addictions. His robust laugh, jokes wit and kindness touched many lives. He was actively involved at Covenant Christian Reformed Church where he served as an Elder and Deacon, served on several committees and used his green thumb to beautify the church grounds. While he is now at peace in the arms of his Lord, he will be missed tremendously by his family and friends. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 4, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 7171 Willard Ave SE, with visitation one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 -11:00 A.M. Memorial contributions in Marvin's memory may be made to the South Christian High School Boosters or the Holland Home Residence Assistance Fund.
