Marian D.
Baker

Celebrating the Joyful Life of Marian D. Baker
Our hearts smile as we remember Marian D. Baker, age 94, of Grand Rapids, who entered peacefully into the next adventure on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Trinity Health in Grand Rapids, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Grand Rapids in 1931 to Nicholas and Winnie (Boerman) Smit, Marian was a woman whose faith was as bright as her spirit and whose love for her family knew no bounds. She often beamed with pride, saying her children and grandchildren had blossomed into wonderful people making their own special mark on the world. Marian always felt like the luckiest woman, believing the Lord had given her the joyful task of nurturing her children's journeys and guiding them towards Him with love.
Marian was the life of any gathering, a true delight to be around. She had a knack for saying just the right thing to bring a smile to your face, and an even greater wisdom for knowing when a twinkle in her eye said it all. With a playful heart and a dash of daring, she explored continents, embracing every new experience with open arms and infectious laughter.
Marian was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, Gerrit Grootenhaar and Dale Baker; her son, David Grootenhaar; and her grandson, Timothy Hoffmann. She's also likely sharing stories and laughter with her siblings and in-laws who went before her: Dr. George (Marcia) Smit, Harriet (Robert) Luidens, Dr. Henry (Betty) Smit, Pierson (Betty) Smit, Robert (Jeane) Langkamp, Ray (Mary) Start, Jack Grootenhaar, and Ed (Fannie) Evenhouse.
Her vibrant spirit lives on through her children: Gerri (David) Christian, Sally (Robert) Todd, Patti Berkey, Barbara (Michael) Hoffmann, and Brenda (Bert) Elliott. Marian's legacy of love and laughter shines brightly through her 19 adored grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her dear sister-in-law, Beverly Gootenhaar, and many cherished nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her playful presence dearly.
A joyful celebration of Marian's life will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 12:30 PM in the Vineyard Chapel at Holland Home Breton Ridge ( 2772 Pfeiffer Woods Dr. SE, Grand Rapids, 49512 ), with Chaplain Les Wiseman leading. Friends and family are invited to share memories and time with the family one hour prior to the service, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
For those who wish to honor Marian's generous heart, please consider a donation in her name to the Holland Home Resident Assistance Fund, helping to bring a little extra joy to others.
