Obituary

Margaret E. (Peg) Staal Bykerk, age 91, of Grand Rapids, arrived at the gates of heaven and ran into the embrace of her loving, gracious Savior, Jesus Christ, reuniting with those she loved dearly, on Monday, June 16.

Peg was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, friend, and daughter of the King. She loved the Lord with all her heart, soul, and mind and was a true prayer warrior, walking and talking with Him daily. She never doubted where she was going and desired for her loved ones here on earth to have the same assurance. Through her words and actions, she was a witness of God's love and faithfulness to her family and all those who knew her.

She enjoyed attending her family's various sports, school, and church events; she often said she raised her four sons on the bleachers at ballgames. She was an avid reader and enjoyed camping, traveling, and spending winters with family and friends on Marco Island. She was a licensed financial investment advisor and was active in the Salvation Army's women's auxiliary and advisory board as well as Booth, ARC, and Kroc Councils. She was a long-standing member of Eastern Avenue CRC and was a firm supporter of Christian education and Right to Life.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Mike and Susan Bykerk, Jeff and Nancy Bykerk, Terry and Lisa Bykerk, Pat and Becki Bykerk, along with 62 grandchildren, their spouses, and great-grandchildren. Her sister, Marilyn Schaal, and brother and sister-in-law, David and Nancy Staal, along with sisters-in-law Martina Voortman, Mary VanDyke, Gertrude Wolfert, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends are also surviving her. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Gerald Bykerk, and grandchild, Mitchell Bykerk, as well as her parents, Minor and Dorothy Staal, infant sister, Dorothy, brother, Minor, Jr. (Snookie), and dear companion, David Tuuk.

Funeral services will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton Street, S.E., Grand Rapids, on Tuesday, June 24, at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
