Obituary

Marcella Ann (Koning) DeBlaey died peacefully on July 27, 2026, at the Cook Unit of Raybrook Manor Holland Home. Marcie was the youngest of four girls, born on November 4, 1938, to George and Mary (Lemmer) Koning in Kalamazoo, MI. Intelligent, a talented pianist and a cheerleader, Marcie graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School and entered Calvin College. At Calvin, she met Gordon L. DeBlaey, knowing he was "the one" after their very first date. They married in Kalamazoo on August 21, 1959 and enjoyed 62 very happy years of marriage before Gord died in 2022. Marcie was also preceded in death by her parents, her three sisters, Alice Owen, Betty Koning and Mary Bosker and their spouses, John Owen and Bob Bosker; two nephews; and by her son, Michael. Marcie is survived by her daughter, Mary (Bob) Jackson; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Philip (Anna Dowell) Jackson with children Geneva and Gregory; Ellen Jackson; Griffin (Colleen) Jackson with children Finn, Honor and Eden; and Drew Jackson with daughter Simona; as well as nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Marcie was a woman of many talents. She began piano lessons at six, initially taught by her father, and continued to play for many years. She played for her own pleasure and in service to others during her school years and later, playing regularly with the Friendship ministry at Shawnee Park CRC as well as at family and friend events. Marcie was a great student, graduating as Valedictorian from high school, obtaining her degree from the Calvin College/Blodgett nursing program and later completing her BSN. Her vocation as a nurse became an intrinsic aspect of her life. Beginning as a hospital floor nurse, Marcie transitioned to psychiatric nursing in 1964, a field she enjoyed for the rest of her career. Her professionalism, her competence and her kindness made her an asset to patients, co-workers and families.

Over the years, Marcie and Gord maintained close friendships with the "Clear Lake" group based in California. Initially friends of Gord growing up, the group vacationed together annually for nearly 50 years. Marcie and Gord also developed strong relationships throughout their years in Grand Rapids. 30 years participation in a monthly book club, golfing, boating, attending Calvin sporting events and traveling with dear friends were all evidence of close and abiding friendships. For many years, Shawnee Park CRC was the church home and family that meant so much to Marcie. Among many other things, she participated the Friendship ministry, Ladies' Fellowship and in planning Adult Sunday School.

God blessed Marcie with a life of meaning and purpose. She was a loving and supportive partner to Gord, an engaged and loving mother to Mary and Mike, a proud grandmother, an adoring great-grandmother, a dedicated nurse, a fine friend and a woman of God. As losses to dementia increased, along with the loss of most of her vision, by God's grace, she continued to respond to hymns and the Word and often showed her sweetest smile.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the myriad staff at Raybrook who cared for Marcie with gentle compassion and to Faith Hospice for their care and support.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 30th, from 4 to 6 pm at Shawnee Park CRC. A memorial service will take place at Shawnee Park CRC at 11 am the following day, Friday, July 31, with an hour of visitation prior, beginning at 10 am. Inurnment at Rest Lawn Memorial Park.
