Loyd Evans Winer, 93 years of age, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Blodgett Hospital. Loyd was born in 1929 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Mervin and Ina (Wood) Winer. He was the middle child of three children. Loyd graduated from South High School in 1947. Then attended Grand Rapids Junior College, before finishing at Michigan State University where he graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1951.

After graduating, Loyd joined the United States Marines reserve and received an honorable discharge, before joining the United States Navy. He attended Officers Candidate School where he became a Lieutenant JG in the United States Navy. He served his country on two different aircraft carriers in the Atlantic fleet, USS Gilbert Islands (CVE-107) and USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) from 1951 to 1956. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1956 with the rank of lieutenant. Loyd then went back to Michigan State University and received a Master in Applied Mechanics.

Loyd worked for J & G Daverman and was the primary engineer on designing the new runways at the now Gerald R. Ford International Airport. He then started his own company with Paul Newhof, called Newhof & Winer, Inc. in 1967. The company provided engineering services to Amway, Herman Miller, Steelcase, Attwood Corporation, Keeler Brass, and other industries in the Grand Rapids area for 28 years.

Loyd married Suzanne Mare in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1954 at First (Park) Congregational Church. Loyd is survived by his brother, Ward O. Winer, his four children: Thomas (Linda) Winer, Gregory (Sue) Winer, Laura (Greg) Braxton, and Brian (Monika) Winer. His thirteen grandchildren: Evan (Angela) Winer, Meghan (Jon) Berghorst, Eric (Kate) Winer, Katie (Caleb) Sinzinger, Jon (Erin) Winer, Mike (Liz) Winer, Dan (Alicia) Winer, Hannah, Erin and Dean Braxton, and Matelin, Gwen, and Karina Winer, and his 13 great grandchildren.

Loyd was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne, parents Mervin and Ina Winer, his sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Russell Prince, and sister-in-law Charlene Cortright.

Loyd was a member of First (Park) Congregational Church for 70 years and served the church in many different rolls, including Treasurer, Chair of the Trustees, Endowment Committee member, and Chair of the Restoration Committee after the 1988 church sanctuary fire.

Loyd served on area boards including Salvation Army, Pilgrim Manor, Indian Trails Camp, and Dwelling Place. Loyd was also active with the Greater Grand Rapids YMCA Service Club which supports Camp Manitou-Lin and Santa Claus Girls. Loyd and Suzanne funded a scholarship (Loyd and Suzanne Winer Scholarship) for STEM students at Grand Rapids Community College. Last year Loyd was awarded the Distinguished Alumni award in 2022 from Grand Rapids Community College.

Loyd enjoyed camping with his family, traveling with wife Sue to all 50 states along with many travels throughout Europe and England, including his father-in-law's home in London. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be missed by his family. He was a great example to all of us.
