Obituary

Lela Ruth Grover was a beacon of love and optimism whose presence illuminated the lives of everyone she touched. Born on March 2, 1930, in the humble town of Fairview, North Carolina, Lela's journey was one marked by resilience, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to God, family, and her many communities. She departed from this world on May 19, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, her heart taking its final, peaceful beat.

Lela's early years were not without adversity, yet she emerged as a trailblazer, becoming the First Woman President of Emma High School in Asheville, North Carolina. Her intelligence shone brightly, and despite health challenges that deprived her of the valedictorian honor, she continued to excel academically, graduating with honors from Trinity College in St. Petersburg, Florida, with a degree in business. Her tenacity in the face of obstacles laid the groundwork for a life characterized by achievement and the drive to uplift others.

The pinnacle of Lela's accomplishments was not found in accolades or titles, but in the loving family she built with her cherished husband, Marold R. Grover, Sr. Together, they nurtured a home filled with warmth and encouragement, raising four amazing children: Patricia Louise Gabrielse, Marold (Scott) R. Grover Jr., and John David (JD) Grover, carrying on the legacy of their late eldest sister, Marilyn Ruth Onyon. Lela's love further extended to her adored grandchildren Virginia (Tyron) Whitaker, Victoria Onyon, Charles Onyon; Steven (Sydney) Gabrielse, Aaron (Kandra) Gabrielse, Seth (Kelly) Gabrielse, Rachel Gabrielse; Ben (Kaitlin) Grover, Kelsey (Ken) McDonagh, and Kate (Colin) Emrich. Also her great-grandchildren Michaela, Harmony, and Rhianna Whitaker, Kayden and Kyiah Onyon, and Eli, Savannah, and Mavis Gabrielse, all shining examples of her nurturing spirit. Also very much loved were Marold's children and their families from his first marriage, Madonna and Arnold Grover.

Lela's life was a testament to the power of God's providence. Orphaned at a young age, she vowed to ensure that no one would ever feel the desolation of being alone or unloved. This commitment to service was the cornerstone of her existence, and she touched countless lives through her genuine interest in people's well-being. She possessed an innate ability to make everyone she met feel valued and heard. She strove to be the "hands and feet of Jesus" to everyone she encountered.

Those who knew Lela would describe her as the epitome of love, optimism, and generosity. She approached life with a joyous heart and a belief in the goodness of people. Lela's radiant smile was a source of comfort and inspiration, and her words were always filled with encouragement and hope. She had the unique ability to see the silver lining in every cloud and to impart that vision to others, helping them to recognize their own strengths and potential. Although many times direct with her words, the people who knew and loved her completely understood the foundation was always love.

Lela's influence extended beyond her immediate circle through her professional endeavors and community involvement. She applied her business acumen and compassionate nature to create environments where individuals could thrive and feel valued. Her legacy is not only in her accomplishments, but also in the countless lives she enriched through her dedication to service.

As we celebrate the remarkable life of Lela Ruth Grover, let us remember the lessons she imparted through her unwavering positivity and boundless love. She showed us that every individual has the ability to leave an indelible mark on this world, not through grand gestures, but through simple acts of kindness and understanding. Lela's legacy is a guidepost for all who seek to live a life of purpose and connection.

In the words of Lela herself, "It was only by God's grace and faithfulness that I was able to do anything in this world. He is the beginning and the end to a happy, successful life".
