Obituary

Judson Lloyd Smeelink, 99, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Jud was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine Smeelink; his sisters, Carol and Lorraine; and his son, Joel Smeelink, who went to be with Jesus in 1971.

He is survived by his children: Judy (Harvis Beene), Jack (Diane Banas), Joy (Paul Boerman), and Joni (Rob Mitchell).

He was a happy grandfather to 13 grandchildren: Judy/Harvis Beene family: Shawn (Maryann), Marques, Justin (Karianne), Nathan (Stacy), and Lisa (Kenn) Russell. Jack/Diane Smeelink family: Kevin (Mary) Piechowiak, and Sally (Ryan) Seeley. Joy/Paul Boerman family: Andrew (Amanda), Amy (Jack) Frawley, and David (Hannah). Joni/Rob Mitchell family: Ben, Charlie (Liz), and Audrey. He was also blessed with 19 great-grandchildren.

Jud joined the United States Navy at age 18 and served for 4 years. He attended the University of Notre Dame while serving in the navy and then completed his education at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After graduating from Calvin College, Jud joined his father in optical work and carried on the Smeelink Optical Service business the rest of his career. He approached his work with honesty, excellence, and a genuine desire to serve others.

He was a longtime member of Madison Square Christian Reformed Church, where he faithfully worshiped and served. He also participated in numerous optical mission trips through the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) and other mission organizations, using his skills to help people in need. In addition, he had an exquisite appreciation for God's creation which was exemplified by his hobbies of camping, hiking, skiing, gardening, and photography.

Jud loved people and loved serving them. Whether through his work, his church, mission trips, friendships, or family, he looked for ways to help others. We, his family, are so thankful for the legacy of faith he leaves behind.

More than anything, Jud loved Jesus. His faith guided his life and gave him great peace as he looked forward to heaven. In his final weeks and months he often spoke of his desire to "go home" and was excited to go! While we will miss him deeply, we rejoice knowing he is now face to face with the Savior he loved so much.

Funeral services will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St., SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546) on Tuesday, June 30th, at 11 am. Visiting hours are 10- 11 am. All are welcome.
