Obituary

Judson Besteman, age 100, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025.

Born on March 8, 1925, to Lilian (Bergsma) Besteman and Jacob A. Besteman, Judson lived a full century marked by devotion to family, faith, and community.

He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Besteman, and the loving father of Cynthia and Henry Knott, Douglas and Linda Besteman, and Barb and Jim Kok. He was a cherished grandfather to seven and a treasured great-grandfather to nine. Judson was preceded in death by his siblings Mart Besteman, Francis Jonker, and Karst Besteman.

He owned and operated Midstate Fruit in Cadillac, Michigan, a food distribution company that served northern Michigan for many years. He also proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Trathen (DD-530) in the Pacific. His commitment to service extended beyond the military—Judson served faithfully as an elder and deacon in several churches throughout his life.

Jud had a lifelong love of boating and flying. Over the years, he owned many boats, and in retirement, he ambitiously built one from scratch—a project that proved far more involved than he first imagined, but one he completed with characteristic determination.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Breton Rehab and Living Center, who cared for Judson with tenderness and affection, often calling him "Grandpa." They also wish to thank their friends at Calvary Church for their continued connection and support.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 4, at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE). The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home on Friday, October 3, 4:30 – 6:00 pm, as well as one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holland Home – Breton Rehab and Living Center or to Mel Trotter Ministries.
