Obituary

Dr. Judith Louise Meyer, 92, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 12th in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Judy was born in Grand Rapids on February 26th, 1933, the oldest daughter of Evangeline (Boerma) and George Meyer. Judy was a pioneer in the

medical industry as a female physician of Obstetrics / Gynecology, breaking barriers when medical schools and hospitals were limiting women. After graduating from Calvin College in 1955, she contemplated medical school while attending Michigan State University to obtain a masters in Philosophy, where she gained a life-long love of the Spartans. Judy went on to study at Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia, graduating in 1961. After working at Blodgett Hospital's Cardiac study group one summer during medical school, she returned to Grand Rapids for her internship. Blodgett was close to home and to her heart as all of the Meyer children were born there, and allowed her to stay at home with her parents. Judy went back to Philadelphia and Woman's Medical College for her residency before coming home again to live in Grand Rapids and set up her very successful 35-year private practice career as an OB/GYN in Grandville. In her retirement announcement, Judy admitted she had lost count of how many thousands of babies she had delivered, but she was very proud and thankful for assisting so many mothers and children.

In her school age years, Judy enjoyed being a camp counselor, working at Lake Michigan during high school and in Vermont during college. She told stories of teaching tennis and canoeing to the young campers and remembered those summers very fondly. Over the years, Judy often rented a cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan near Grand Haven. The perfect spot for beautiful sunsets, Fricano's pizza and playing catch in the lake. Her family has many memories of Judy going into the water, regardless of the temperature, making us come join her and when the water was calm, walking out as far as possible.

Judy had a lifelong passion for music, playing the violin in various local orchestras, including the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra (fka West Shore Symphony Orchestra), and singing in the Park Congregational Church choir. She loved listening to classical music and the opera, and was an avid attendee of the Symphony, Opera, and enjoyed Met Live productions well into her late eighties. Judy also had a love of dogs, having several apricot miniature poodles (Tristan, Toby, Liddy and Eva Lou) as her faithful companions and delivering several litters of her friend's Wire Fox Terriers, serving as the OB and naming the puppies in alphabetical order.

Despite her busy career, Judy remained active in her community as a member of the Women's City Club of Grand Rapids for 56 years, the longest in Club memory. In retirement, she rarely missed a Thursday program and never hesitated to share medical advice or interesting books and articles with others. She also loved supporting and visiting Meijer Gardens. She enjoyed sharing her favorite things with everyone in her life, whether it be bags of Cheese Kurls, 3M gift boxes or treats from Van's or Steenstra's bakeries. For fun, Judy was intrigued by numbers and patterns and spent years trying to win the lottery.

Judy is survived by her nieces and nephews, Nancy Rhodes (Mark) and Barbra Byington, daughters of her sister Sally, and Jenifer Magliato (Nick), David Meyer, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick (Ryan) and Travis Meyer (Celia) children of her brother Larry, as well as many grandnephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her younger sister Sally Ruth and younger brother Lawrence George (Linda) as well as her mother Eva and father George.
