Joyce
Schuur
Jan 8, 1937 — Nov 26, 2023
Joyce Elaine Schuur, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was born on January 8, 1937, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Ralph and Pearl (Nyquist) Patterson. She graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in Muskegon, Michigan and then graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University. Joyce married the love of her life, Gerald (Jerry) Schuur, on June 27, 1959, and they were happily married for 64 years. She taught first grade at Montague Elementary School in Montague, Michigan for five years before she and Jerry started their family. Joyce was a devoted homemaker and loved to cook and bake. With Jerry's job, they were transferred to several locations in the United States, including Youngstown, New York; Columbia, Tennessee; Dallas, Texas; and then back to Youngstown, New York. In retirement, Joyce and Jerry moved back to Michigan to be close to family. She enjoyed traveling and in addition to visiting family she also made several trips to Hawaii, went on an Alaskan Cruise, and went to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico. Joyce was a loving and supportive mother to her daughters, Laurie (Karl) Seper, Linda (Robert) Manzella, and Lisa (Kolan) Wright. She particularly cherished her role as grandmother to all of her grandchildren, Paul and Brian Seper, Rocco (Sara) Manzella, Giana Manzella, Jena (Jon) Blevins, Alex (Percy), Noelle, Joel, Andrew, Matthew, and Hannah Wright. Joyce was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Elaine (Joyce's namesake – middle name) Blevins, June Manzella (July 22, 2019 – August 24, 2020), and James Manzella. In lieu of flowers, Joyce supported St. Jude's Children's Hospital and donations can be made accordingly. A Memorial Service and Visitation will be held on December 8 from 10 am to 12 pm at Zaagman Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in March 2024 at Caledonia United Methodist Church. Interment is at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
