Joyce Ann Schoonejongen, born Paterson, New Jersey June 26, 1939. Died Grand Rapids, Michigan April 1, 2024. Joyce was raised in Prospect Park, New Jersey, graduated from Eastern Christian High School, Calvin College, and William Paterson University, and became a teacher. Her career began at South Olive Christian School in Michigan. For forty-two years she taught at the Eastern Christian Schools in Midland Park and Wyckoff, New Jersey. For most of those years she lived in Hawthorne, New Jersey. She was an active member of the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church, until she moved to Michigan in 2005, when she joined the Ridgewood Christian Reformed Church in Jenison. She served that congregation as a deacon and director of the Kids Hope program. She also volunteered at the Potter's House School and Butterworth Hospital. She spent her final years living in an apartment on the Raybrook campus of the Holland Home. During her eighty-four years she touched the lives of hundreds of students and countless other individuals. She enjoyed travelling, socializing, singing, knitting, reading, and just being useful. She is survived by her sister Jean Janecek of West Milford, New Jersey, her brother, Robert, of Grand Rapids, seven nieces and nephews and their children, and many friends in Michigan and New Jersey. A memorial service will be held April 10, 2024, at Zaagman Memorial Chapel in Grand Rapids at 11:00 AM with family visitation one hour prior. She will be buried at Fair Lawn Cemetery in New Jersey, at a later date. Memorials in her name may sent to the Eastern Christian School Association or Faith Hospice.
