Obituary

Joseph Theodore Rooks, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, entered perfect Shalom on January 18, 2025, after a courageous two-month battle with stage 4 cancer. He was 47 years old.

Joey was born on August 17, 1977, in St. Charles, Illinois. From an early age, he exhibited a creative and joyful spirit, embracing life with enthusiasm and kindness. An active child, he found joy in sports—especially soccer—and developed a deep love for the great outdoors, which led him to pursue a Christian Ministries degree at Trinity University, work at various Christian camps and hike the entire Appalachian Trail in 2008. He loved the Lord with all his heart, mind, soul and strength and was passionate about helping the gospel go forth in each circumstance he encountered.

In 2009, Joey met Rachel, the love of his life, at their church. They were married on July 9, 2011 and together they built a life filled with love and purpose, raising their three cherished children: Arden, Declan, and Emery. Joey's steadfast devotion to his family brought him immense joy and fulfillment. His mornings were sacred moments with coffee in hand and his Bible open - his evenings were often spent strumming the guitar, going on family walks, enjoying a campfire, mending broken toys or hearts, or making up fantastical stories for his kids.

Known for his joyous spirit and generous heart, Joey was a friend to all and loved by everyone who knew him. His creativity and responsibility shone through in every aspect of his life.

Joey is survived by his beloved wife Rachel; their children Arden, Declan, and Emery; his parents Foster and Edythe; siblings Bryan, Jayne, and Bethany.

A Celebration of Joey's Life will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Christ Church PCA (2500 Breton Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546) with Rev. Andrew Vander Maas officiating.
