Obituary

John M. Savela, 88, of Grand Rapids, passed away Wednesday January 10, 2024, at home. He was born in Hancock, MI in 1935 to the late Eino and Martha Savela. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Savela and his son-in-law, Rob Woodrick. Those left to cherish John's memory include his wife, Lillian Jean Savela; his daughters, Candy (Doug) Vonk and Vonnie Woodrick; grandchildren, Jay (Lisa) Vonk, Chase Woodrick, Whitney (Brandon) Rottiers and Maddie Woodrick; and his great-grandchildren, Emerson Vonk, and Poppy and Sadie Rottiers.

John completed his education at Mass High School in Mass City, Michigan. Following his graduation, he served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he gained work experience in a gypsum mine in Iowa.

John began his professional journey as a heavy equipment operator, specializing in construction projects located on the Eastern side of the state. His expertise primarily involved the construction of highways, where he frequently shared tales of his demanding work schedule, consisting of five 12-hour shifts, a 10-hour shift, and an 8-hour shift. Interestingly, he would humorously say "5 --12's, a 10, and a 8 and we prayed for rain".

He then transitioned to General Motors where he spent 30 as a skilled tradesman, he had been recognized with numerous "suggestion awards" for his innovative ideas to enhance the work-line. Furthermore, he willingly shared those ideas with his colleagues, enabling them to also be rewarded for their contributions and improving overall work efficiency on the line. He firmly believed in the importance of supporting others in achieving success and demonstrated exceptional teamwork long before it became a common business term.

John took great satisfaction in maintaining his garden and supplying his family with home-grown produce. Over time, the garden expanded until it stretched across the entire back of the property line. Eventually, potatoes became the predominant crop, which were then stored in the "root" cellar. Resulting in fresh vegetables being accessible to his family year-round. John derived immense pleasure from his garden and the provision it afforded his loved ones.

As a Finlander, John introduced the concept of a sauna to create a cultural tradition that he could pass on to his children. He greatly cherished the sauna and his pool as they provided him with a means to unwind and find relaxation. Recognizing the sauna's significance as not just a place for bathing, but also for its potential medicinal benefits, John would often remark, "A sauna is poor man's medicine." If his kids got sick, he would suggest hanging out in the sauna more to help them get better.

John lived a rich and extraordinary life alongside his beloved wife Lillian and their two children, Candy, and Yvonne. His presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
