Johanna Alberta
Van Der Schans
Feb 26, 1933 — Dec 17, 2025
Johanna Alberta Van der Schans, born on February 26, 1933 in Zevenhuizen, NL, passed away on December 17, 2025, in Grand Rapids, MI.
She was a daughter, wife, mother, Oma, and nurse; but most of all, a devoted child of God. Born to civically minded parents, Johanna lived a life full of kindness and encouragement to those who crossed her path and always maintained a grateful and compassionate spirit.
After marrying Neil in 1955, a partnership that lasted 60 years, they immigrated to Canada to pursue his studies. The family moved to Hong Kong, Japan, Brazil and finally Indianapolis through Neil's work with Eli Lilly. Through the moves Johanna was the calm and constant anchor of the family, embracing each new culture and being a willing volunteer wherever they lived. In Hong Kong Johanna got her first driver's license, learning to drive a stick shift on steep hills on the left side of the road. While living in Japan she studied the art of flower arranging (Ikebana) which she applied all her life. In Brazil she learned to speak Portuguese fluently within 6 months after attending a full immersion language school.
Upon returning to Indianapolis, Johanna satisfied a lifelong interest in medicine by studying nursing. She became a full-time student in her 40's and earned her RN degree. She worked as an orthopedic nurse for over 10 years. In retirement with Neil, she enjoyed her home on Johnson Road, her church, garden, books, knitting, friends, and family.
Johanna leaves behind her well-loved children: Marianne (Michael) Van Herk, Edwin JC (Sally) van der Schans, and Raymond (Kathleen, deceased) Van der Schans. Grandchildren: Katherine, Raymond, Mackenzie and Will. Sisters in law: Ariane van Reeuwijk, Mieke Gelley, and Ursula Alley; also her nieces, nephews, and a wealth of friends. Her wisdom and quiet strength will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, at 11:00 am at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546). Johanna's family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Light refreshments to follow the service.
A livestream of the service will be available on the Zaagman Memorial Chapel obituary page for Johanna.
