James
Israels
Sep 14, 1951 — Dec 25, 2024
James Henry Israels, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, lived a life marked by a contagious enthusiasm and an unwavering commitment to those he loved. Born on September 14, 1951, in Muskegon, Michigan, Jim's journey through life was one of joy, love, and a ceaseless desire to make a positive impact on the people around him. On December 25, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jim's remarkable life journey came to a peaceful close due to sudden natural causes.
Jim's early years in Grand Rapids laid the foundation for a life that would be rich in relationships and community service. As former Vice President of Israels Designs for Living, he combined his passion for creativity with his business acumen to leave a lasting legacy in the industry. His involvement with the Jaycees and various boards in his earlier years reflected his dedication to civic engagement and his belief in the power of community. Jim's professional life was paralleled by his personal life, where he was a devoted father and husband, always putting his family first making him the beloved patriarch of his family.
The love story between Jim and his late wife, Laurie Israels, of 48+ years, was one for the ages. Together, they shared a love of music, family, and adventures—particularly their cherished times in Grand Haven and on spontaneous road trips. Even after Laurie's passing, Jim continued to honor their shared passions, finding solace in the memories they created together.
Jim's legacy is carried on by his loving daughter, Jennifer, son-in-law Mike, his son James and daughter-in-law Jacqueline and their children James and Josephine. His siblings, Bob and Paulette Israels, Joyce and Dale DeVries, and Pam Medendorp; in-laws, Bill and Cheryl Kwiek, Rick and Lisa Kwiek, and Ann and Tom Lavere as well as many loving nieces, nephews and Cousins. He is now joyfully reunited with his loving wife and best friend, Laurie Israels; parents, Ray and Harriett Israels; Parents-in-law William and Genevieve Kwiek and many other beloved family members and friends.
Jim embodied perseverance and optimism, encouraging all who knew him to face life's challenges with courage and to always seek the silver lining.
Jim's interests were as diverse as his impact on the world. He had a love for listening to music that was both a comfort and a source of joy throughout his life. His home was often filled with an array of melodies that brought together friends and family. The adventures he shared with Laurie were legendary, and his love for road trips never waned, each journey bringing new experiences and stories to share. His commitment to his church and Bible study groups was unwavering, providing him with a community of faith that supported him through all of life's seasons.
The time Jim spent with his grandchildren was precious, and he instilled in them the values of kindness, curiosity, and the importance of maintaining strong family bonds. His playful spirit and willingness to embark on or share any adventure, whether revisiting westside landmarks from his youth or sharing stories of his past, will carry him through their lives and many other friends and family members long into the future.
Jim Israels lived a life that was a beacon of hope and love. He taught us that life is an adventure to be embraced with open arms and a full heart. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him to live with intention, to cherish every moment, and to love without reservation. Jim's story is not one of an end, but a beautiful reminder that the impact of a well-lived life is eternal.
