James Peter
Bosscher
Oct 12, 1924 — Aug 7, 2022
James P. Bosscher, 97, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2022. Born October 12,1924, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Peter and Reka Bosscher, he served in the Army Air Force and attended Calvin University, earning advanced degrees from Purdue and the University of Michigan. In 1947 he married Angeline Droge and together they opened their home to countless guests including students from around the world.
Jim was a pioneering faculty member in Calvin's Department of Engineering and a lifelong educator. He was a model and inspiration to generations of engineering students, encouraging them to find "work that matters." Integrating faith and learning, he was always looking for creative ways that engineers might address needs in the community and serve the Kingdom. He was an initiator of many endeavors including Grand Rapids' first recycling program—Recycle Unlimited, Camp Tall Turf, Safe Haven Ministries, and Hilltop University in Nigeria.
With a deep love for the church, he was an active member of Shawnee Park CRC, including sharing his love of music and deep bass voice with the choir. He took life seriously, but looked for humor in every situation and was an unrepentant punster.
Jim is survived by his wife of 74 years, Angie; children Jack and Joan (Sopjes) Bosscher, Beth and Bob Terborg, David and Mary (Slotman) Bosscher, Marcia (Vermaire) Bosscher, Barb and Steve Timmermans, and honorary son, Wayne Nguyen Hung; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his son, Peter J. Bosscher, and sisters and their husbands Gerda and Al Walcott and Helen and Rich Zoodsma.
The funeral will be held at Shawnee Park CRC (2255 Tecumseh SE, GR, MI) Thursday, August 11, at 11 am with visitation at Shawnee at 10 am. Visitation is also 6 to 8 pm, Wednesday, August 10, at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St., SE). Memorial contributions may be made to Tall Turf Ministries (tallturf.org or 2010 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, GR, MI 49507) or to the James and Angeline Bosscher Scholarship (connect.calvin.edu or 3201 Burton SE, GR, MI 49546).
