Obituary

Jacquelyn "Jackie" Mulder Venegas was released into the fullness of God's eternal peace and love on October 31, 2024. Born in Ocheyedan, Iowa in 1942, Jackie was the first of four daughters to Reverend John and Anne Mulder. In the mid-1950s, her family relocated to Michigan, where Jackie attended Oakdale Christian and later graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School. She went on to attend Calvin College (class of '64), and during her time there, Jackie joined a service trip to New York City through S.W.I.M., an experience that would change her life forever. Inspired by the city's diversity and energy, she returned to Manhattan in 1966 as a volunteer for the CRC Home Missions. It was there she met her soulmate, Dante Venegas. Jackie returned briefly to Michigan to pursue her Master's degree in Social Work at the University of Michigan, but her heart called her back to New York, where she and Dante married in 1970. Together, they welcomed their daughters, Andrea in 1971 and Michele 11 months later. In 1979, the family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan when Dante accepted a pastoral position at Madison Square Christian Reformed Church (CRC). Jackie, a gifted musician, blessed the congregation with her gospel piano and choir direction, touching many lives with her music and spirit. After receiving her second Masters in Social Work from Western Michigan University, Jackie dedicated her career to social work within the Grand Rapids Public Schools, always championing those most in need. A tireless advocate, she also committed herself to promoting racial reconciliation within the CRC, a passion driven by her experience as part of an interracial family. Together, trailblazers Jackie and Dante left an indelible mark on the CRC, building bridges and inspiring change. In her final year and a half, Jackie resided in assisted living at Raybrook Manor, where she enjoyed new friendships and received compassionate, loving care from the staff, including the angels from Faith Hospice. Jackie leaves behind her daughters Andrea Venegas Rook (Jason) and Michele Venegas (Ty Van Wingen); grandchildren Alex Venegas (Kevin Johnson), Jonah, Zakaria, Samuel Venegas Rook, Tobin Venegas, Selah Venegas Van Wingen; great-granddaughters Stella and Olympia Venegas Johnson; sisters Marianne Stehouwer, Arlys (Gene) Heeringa, Lois (Dick) VanDonselaar and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Reverend Dante Venegas, and brother-in-law Charles Stehouwer. Jackie's legacy of compassion, justice, and music will endure in the lives of those she touched. Her family rejoices in knowing she is in heaven, reunited with Dante, free and whole again.
