Obituary

Jacob John "Jay" Van Bruggen passed away on June 9, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 95. He was born on April 28, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to John A. Van Bruggen and Johanna Brink Van Bruggen. He lived a long, rich, and faithful life devoted to God, education, and family.

Jay grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he attended Grand Rapids Christian High School and later Calvin University. His passion for learning and teaching shaped the course of his life. He began his teaching career at Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan, before pursuing graduate studies. He earned his master's degree from the University of Iowa and continued doctoral studies at the University of Nebraska.

In 1961, Jay moved to Clarion, Pennsylvania, where he joined the faculty of Clarion University. As a member of the Department of Anthropology, Philosophy, and Political Sciences, he spent three decades teaching and mentoring students. Throughout his career, he was known for his intellectual curiosity, thoughtful instruction, and patient encouragement. Teaching was not merely a profession for Jay—it was a calling. He retired from Clarion University in 1991 after a distinguished academic career.

Jay's life was anchored by two great loves. First and foremost was his faith in Jesus Christ, which guided his decisions and sustained him throughout every season of life. A lifelong member of the Christian Reformed Church, he remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to Christian service. His second great love was his beloved wife, Arlene Carlett Van Bruggen. Together they built a marriage founded on faith, devotion, and partnership, sharing 52 years together until Arlene's passing on February 5, 2014.

Jay and Arlene were blessed with two children: Sara (Arik) Murray of Howard City, Michigan, and Jon (Ricki) Van Bruggen of Gaithersburg, Maryland. He took great pride in his family and delighted in their accomplishments and happiness.

Retirement did not diminish Jay's passion for education and service. Following his retirement, he and Arlene embarked on a remarkable adventure, spending five years in China teaching English at various universities. Their work reflected Jay's lifelong commitment to learning, cultural understanding, and helping others grow through education.

A lifelong educator and learner, Jay remained curious about the world and eager to engage with new ideas. He was known for his patience, kindness, steadfast faith, and gentle spirit. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of family, friends, colleagues, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jay's faithful example, quiet wisdom, and enduring commitment to God, family, and education will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched. Though he will be greatly missed, his family rejoices in the assurance of God's promises and the hope of eternal life that sustained him throughout his journey.

A funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 17th at 11AM at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids, MI) with a visitation starting at 10AM.
