Obituary

Herman John Prins, fondly known as Herm, passed away peacefully in Cedar Springs, Michigan, on the 4th of July, 2024. Born on November 20, 1925, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was a man characterized by his faith, adventurous spirit, and loving nature, whose feet traversed all seven continents during his 98 years of life. Herm was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Margaret Prins, his older brother Theunis, his sister Margaret "Marge" Prins, and his son Patrick Prins. His legacy continues through his remaining siblings, Shirley Isaacson and Rudy Prins of Michigan; his children, Robert Prins of California, Douglas Prins of Michigan, and Myrinda "Mindy" Hedrick of North Carolina; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply. Herm's quest for knowledge led him from Grand Rapids Christian High School to Calvin College and ultimately to the University of Michigan, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Forestry, followed by a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Western Michigan University. His devotion to God, country, and the Earth was reflected in his military service; he served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, Herm spent six months as a Forest Ranger in Idaho before returning to Michigan, where he and his brother Theunis ran Prins Construction Company for nine years. It was in the realm of education that Herm left his indelible mark, dedicating 29 years to teaching in public schools across California and Michigan, inspiring students with his love for learning and the natural world. Herm's personal interests were as diverse as his professional life. His hobbies ranged from the artistry of taxidermy and silversmithing to the delicate craft of model ship-building. His collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils was a testament to his love for nature. Above all, Herm was a world traveler, having the distinction of visiting every continent and reveling in the wonder of our planet's diversity. In the words of Herm himself, here is how he wanted to be remembered: "as a devout Christian Servant of the LORD JESUS CHRIST and a devout loving father and grandfather." His remarkable journey has come to an end, but the chapters of his life will be forever etched in the hearts and memories of all who knew and loved him. Herm Prins lived a life filled not just with years, but also with experiences, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate through the many lives he touched.
