Henry
Zuiderveen
May 20, 1937 — Jul 16, 2025
Henry John Zuiderveen, affectionately known as Hank, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 16, 2025. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Henry was the beloved son of the late John and Alice (VanDam) Zuiderveen.
Henry was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a faithful friend to many. He married the love of his life, Verla (Dornbos) Zuiderveen, on August 26, 1960, and together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and faith.
Henry is survived by his children: Julie and Mark Palkowski, Marc and Sharon Zuiderveen, Scott and Pam Zuiderveen; his nine cherished grandchildren; and twelve adored great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Scholten and Annetta Marcusse, and his brother, Herman Zuiderveen.
A lifelong learner and passionate educator, Henry earned his bachelor's degree from Calvin University and his master's degree from Michigan State University. He dedicated his career to shaping young lives as a teacher, guidance counselor, and high school principal. Henry was deeply committed to his students and believed in their potential, always encouraging them with compassion and humor.
Outside of the classroom, Henry found joy in music and had a great sense of humor that brought smiles to everyone around him. He will be remembered for his quick wit, his kind heart, and his steadfast faith.
Henry's life was a testament to the power of dedication, grace, and love. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held on July 31, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton Street SE. A memorial service for Hank will be on August 1, 2025, at 11:30 AM, at LaGrave CRC, 107 La Grave Ave SE, with one hour of visitation prior, beginning at 10:30 AM.
