Obituary

Henry Robert "Bud" Smitter, a cherished beacon of love and wisdom, completed his earthly journey on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the venerable age of 96. Born on May 17, 1929, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was a lifelong resident of the city he adored. Bud's life was a testament to his unwavering faith, his boundless generosity, and his remarkable ability to touch the lives of everyone around him.

Bud's journey began as a young man of deep intellect and passion. After graduating with honors from Calvin College in 1951, he furthered his education at the University of Michigan Law School, earning his Juris Doctor in 1954. His dedication to service was evident early on as he proudly served in the National Guard, beginning in 1951. Bud's career was as distinguished as it was impactful, marked by his involvement in the Grand Rapids Bar Association and his tenure as a Kent County Commissioner. His commitment to community upliftment was further demonstrated through his active roles in organizations like the Knights of the Round Table, Brown Home, Bethany Reformed Church, and Orchard Hills Reformed Church.

Bud's life was a beautiful dance, shared with his beloved wife of 71 years, Norma. Together, they glided through life's moments, from the Square Dancing of the 1881 club to the elegant Ball Room Dancing floors. Their shared love of travel saw them basking in the warmth of Florida and Gulf Shores, Alabama, forging memories that would last a lifetime.

A man of many talents, Bud was a Ham Radio operator, connecting with people across the globe and sharing his knowledge freely. His hands, always ready to create and mend, found joy in woodworking. He was a devoted reading tutor, enriching the minds of young learners. Bud's green thumb brought forth bountiful gardens, a symbol of his ability to cultivate beauty in all facets of life. His enthusiasm for bowling and golf was matched only by his skill, and his playful spirit was a joy to behold.

Bud's legacy is lovingly carried on by his family, who were the heart of his world. His wife, Norma; his sister, Nancy Zaagman; his son, Joseph Smitter; his daughter, Anne (Thomas) Wright; his granddaughters, Elizabeth Wright (Patrick Travers) and Grace (Albie Hartmayer) Wright; his grandson, Jordan (Lauren) Smitter; and his two great-grandchildren, each embody the values and love he instilled in them.

In Bud, we found a man who was the embodiment of wisdom, his counsel sought by many. He was generous beyond measure, his heart a wellspring of kindness that never ran dry. Bud was also remarkably handy; a craftsman whose skills brought both beauty and function to the world.

As we reflect on the life of Henry Robert "Bud" Smitter, we are reminded that our time here is but a fleeting moment in the grand tapestry of eternity. Bud's life encourages us to live with purpose, to serve with love, and to leave a legacy that echoes through generations. He ran the race set before him with perseverance, his eyes ever fixed on the glory that awaited him. Today, as we celebrate Bud's journey home, we rejoice in the knowledge that he has been welcomed into the arms of his Creator, hearing the words we all long to hear: "Well done, my good and faithful servant.
