Obituary

Harvey Junior Koning of Grand Rapids, Michigan went home to his Savior on June 7, 2023 at age 83. He was born to Harvey Sr. and Marie (Betten) Koning on May 20, 1940. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Mary Ann (Hoeksema), his children Harvey and Mara Koning III, Lucinda Koning, and David and Wendy Koning, and his grandchildren Lydia (Joel) Gustafson, Hannah (Joshua) Boers, Michael (Christine) Dykema, Frances Ann Dykema, Andrew (fiancee Allison Wierda) Koning, Ethan Koning and Chloe Koning. He is also survived by his brother Harold (Jeanne) Koning and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Thomas and Mary Hoeksema and William and Angela Hoeksema. He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law Bernard and Agnes Edna Hoeksema, his sister Florence Alberta Bosscher and his beloved grandson Joel David Koning. Harvey was a lifelong and active member of Seymour Christian Reformed Church. He also participated in a Bible study at Community Church and was grateful for his friendships there. Living out his faith was important to Harvey and he did so in many ways including serving multiple terms as a board member of Bethany Christian Services and Kuyper College. He was a devoted husband and father, an exuberant singer of hymns, a competitive-turned-recreational golfer, and a storyteller. Many years ago, after hearing a sermon on the Apostle Paul's exhortation in I Thessalonians 5:11 "Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up", Harvey took this to heart and carried with him each and every day a card in his pocket with the words "Whom can I encourage today?" He often took the opportunity to encourage others in matters great and small. Harvey will be remembered by many for his generous spirit and his big heart for people going through difficult circumstances. Harvey graduated from Calvin University and the University of Michigan and began his career as a CPA. However, having come from a family of salesmen, he soon followed that path himself. At age 33, he and his brother Harold became owners of a General Motors auto dealership in Lowell, MI. Harvey continued as an auto dealer for forty-four years including many years at Grand Oldsmobile in Grandville where his greatest joy came from the friendships and interactions with colleagues and customers alike. The family is thankful for the care Harvey received from Amy at Visiting Angels and from Faith Hospice and the staff at Trillium Woods. Memorial contributions in Harvey's memory may be made to Seymour Christian Reformed Church or Kuyper College. Visitation for friends and family will be held on Tuesday June 13 from 5-7 pm at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids). A memorial service will be held on Wednesday June 14, at 11:00 am at Seymour Christian Reformed Church (840 Alger St. SE, Grand Rapids) with visitation one hour prior to the service.
